It’s really interesting to see the development of wheels into tank treads. This is effectively the same thing as a tank tread, but it lifts the “foot” instead of rotating around a wheel.
Normal wheels sank into the mud of WW1 battlefields, so their were modified with “wheel girdles” that added reinforced wooden planks to distribute the weight. Naturally, some clever engineer eventually asked “why not stretch a girdle to fit around multiple wheels?”, resulting in the first “continuous track”.
There had beet similar inventions before, but they were only a commercial success on tractors. Sometimes the tractors hauled artillery cannons, but they wouldn’t create the entire field of armored warfare until the British made a prototype tank named “Little Willie”. It was basically an armored tractor, but it proved the concept and paved the way for incredibly rapid tank development.
