Map of Europe in 1520 by Carl Waldseemueller, dedicated to Habsburg emperor Charles V (on the map, south is at the top). Charles was a fitting person to dedicate the map to, because he was the most powerful European political leader since Charlemagne. He combined his various titles to control Spain, parts of Italy, the Netherlands, the Holy Roman Empire, and parts of eastern Europe.
